Nepal’s parliament dissolved, new election date announced on recommendation of new interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki. In addition, a new election date has been set for March next year.

The parliament was dissolved on Friday (September 12) night on the recommendation of the prime minister. The new election date is March 5, 2026, Kiran Pokhrel, press advisor to the president of Nepal, told AFP.

Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki took charge as the interim Prime Minister on Friday night. She has formed a small cabinet government under her leadership. It will last for six months. Nepal’s parliament dissolved, new election date announced for March 2026.

Sushila took the oath at around 9 pm local time yesterday. Earlier, discussions were held between representatives of Nepal’s Gen-G protesters, President Ramchandra Paudel, and Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel. Then everyone agreed on the decision to make Sushila the Prime Minister. Through this, she set the record of becoming the first female Prime Minister in the country’s history.

Nepal’s Zen-Z protested last week against the ban on social media. On Monday, protesters tried to enter parliament when shots were fired. Many students were killed. The protesters then erupted in anger. On Tuesday, as their protests intensified, KP Sharma Oli resigned as prime minister. He then went into hiding. On that day, protesters attacked the homes of many ministers, including two former prime ministers. The finance minister was also beaten up on the street.

Sushila Karki was the Chief Justice of Nepal from 2016 to 2017. She became the country’s first female Chief Justice. She is popular with the gen-ji because of her strong stance against corruption during her time as a judge.

She studied at Banaras Hindu University in India. Once, in an interview given to an Indian media outlet, Sushila said that India has helped Nepal a lot.
